Heritage & more

- By Viraan Vanshi.

The history depicts us as a brave, courageous race of India. We are divided into many clans. Members of our community are not only Hindus but also Sikhs and Muslims as well.

Our community is said to have originated in the lower Indus river-valley of Sindh. Later our forefathers migrated north into the Punjab region in late medieval times and subsequently into the Delhi Territory, north-eastern Rajputana, and the western Gangetic Plain in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Our community played an important role in the development of the martial Khalsa panthan of Sikhism.

Members of our community are known for the fiercely independent character and value for self-respect more than anything, which is why our forefathers offered heavy resistance against any foreign force that treated them unjustly.

Over the centuries more than 2700 gotras have been enlisted in our community. We never marry within the same gothra. Our community takes pride in the joint family system. Many families in our community follow this system even now. Our community follows certain ethnic customs and social traditions uniquely representing the traits of Jats.

Thanks to the hard word and perseverance of our forefathers, our community has grown to be known as one of the most affluent groups in India! Our forefathers have contributed in the fields of arts & culture, politics, economics, architecture, history, science, astronomy, martial & military excellence and spirituality. Today there are many from our brethren who have made a mark as distinguished bureaucrats, writers, artists, administrators, and diplomats.

It is a notable fact that many members of our community find pride in working towards the welfare of the nation. It's not surprising when our community gave birth to many freedom fighters. One of the most celebrated freedom fighter Bhagat Singh belonged to our community.

We are very proud of our glorious past and our 'steeped in tradition' roots. Even today we find great pride in carrying forth the values and tradition taught to us by our forefathers.
